As part of the effort to prepare graduating students of the
institution for the world of work, the University of Uyo on Wednesday
organized a one day leadership training workshop for final year students
across the fields.The workshop, according to the Vice Chancellor, Prof Enefiok Essien was informed by the desire to curb unemployment and social vices after graduating from the institution.
The Vice Chancellor who was represented by the Deputy Vie Chancellor (Academic) Prof. (Mrs) Inyang Udofot, said the strength of the Nigerian graduate are moral capital, intellectual capital, cash and sweat equity. He therefore advised the students to harness such provisions wisely in order to pull themselves out the world and life of competition.
Presenting a paper on the theme of the training workshop “Preparing for the world of work”, Dr Okon Amasi reasoned that the seminar was quite apt at the time the economy of the nation was undergoing recession, as the training will help better prepare the students for self reliance.
He advised the students against solely depending on their degree certificates for survival, maintaining that they need to diversify their means of income to fare better economically.
Her words “The essence of this seminar is to sensitize, enlighten and ultimately help you to discover and bring up the potential in you as well as encourage outstanding students who have performed excellently in their academics”.
“The society grows when it responds to challenges and stagnate to decadence when it shies away from challenges. I am quite optimistic that the skills gained from this workshop will also equip you with the necessary tools needed to combat and alleviate, reduce unemployment and inequality in the society with preponderance of these ills”.
Also speaking, the pioneer Director, Center for Gender Studies, University of Uyo, Prof. Eno-Abasi Urua, urged the students to be pesistent, honest and keep learning continuously to build their capacity and avoid unnecessary comparison with others.
